(HI) Historical Inquiry

This course examines the economic and business history of the United States to 2009. It anaylzes the historical development of the economy and business in shaping American politics, society, and culture since the colonial era. It explores the important changes in the national economy from mercantilism; slavery and the development of capitalism; the rise of big business and industrialization; consumption; and the relationship between business and labor. Particular emphasis is given to the role of the government, individuals, and labor have had in shaping the nation's economic development.
