ENGL3305 - 01 - Satire
Description
This course presents students with a survey of satiric modes, using examples from historical periods when satire flourished-Ancient Rome and eighteenth-century England-in order to define the goals of contemporary satire. Reflecting on the aggressive rhetoric and dark humor that motivates satire, students consider the cultural relevance of work by Juvenal and Horace alongside satiric masterpieces, like Gulliver's Travels and An Essay on the Art of Ingeniously Tormenting, as well as multimedia satires, like Key and Peele, to understand how and why satire gives a voice to people at the margins of power.
