Description

This course introduces students to the fundamentals of criminal investigations and crime scene response for criminal justice (CJ) professionals in the United States. The course is grounded in a scholarly and practical approach to studying criminal investigation, process, and prosecution. Students learn how and why CJ professionals respond to a crime in the manner in which they do. The course analyzes recent cases of crimes against persons and property, as well as cyber and vice crimes, to apply academic knowledge to the real world. The course will also highlight the evolution of American policing, investigations, criminal statutes, and case law. Students will discuss ethical dilemmas faced by CJ professionals processing crimes and the influence of race, class, and gender on criminal investigations. Students will explore appropriate and reformative responses to these dilemmas and challenges.
