Description

(WI) Writing Intensive (QR) Quantitative Reasoning

This course introduces students to basic quantitative and qualitative research methods in criminology and criminal justice through a hands-on approach. Students will learn how to collect and analyze data of various kinds, specifically surveys and in-depth interviews, to empirically study a question related to criminology and criminal justice. Students will also learn how to conduct quantitative secondary data analysis of criminal justice related data using a statistical software package, such as SPSS or RStudio. More specifically, students will conduct basic univariate (such as measures of central tendency, measures of dispersion) and bivariate (such as correlations, chi-square tests, and T-tests) analysis of the quantitative data. This "multi-method" approach to a research question will allow students to thoroughly evaluate varying methods and their appropriateness, advantages, and disadvantages for a wide range of research questions.
